Hi, I’m Sara!
I began drawing and painting as a young child and taught myself to sew as a teenager. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Textile Design at Georgia State University, and focused on illustrative pattern design, natural dyes, and Katazome, a Japanese rice paste resist technique. During college, I collaborated with Urban Outfitters to design original garments that were sold nationwide.
After graduation, I moved to Brooklyn, where my husband and I ran The Sketchbook Project and Brooklyn Art Library and co-authored The Sketchbook Project World Tour, published by Princeton Architectural Press. While in New York, I continued to create drawings and paintings, and taught Katazome.
In 2020, I moved back to my hometown of St. Petersburg, FL, and welcomed my first child. Motherhood has been a big source of inspiration for me. Walking through the historic neighborhoods of St. Pete with my kids, I often draw inspiration from the natural world around me.
I now spend my time between family, freelancing, and supporting our family business, Pete’s Bagels. I always look for small moments to create, and many recent drawings were made in short intervals, while a little one napped nearby.
I am always up for collaborating on teaching opportunities, creating patterns, illustrations, or even just to grab a coffee. I’d love to hear from you!
